The Jenison football team snapped a four-game skid on Friday night in a 35-7 victory over West Ottawa at David McKenzie Stadium on Homecoming. The Wildcats improve to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in OK Red play, while West Ottawa falls to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Wildcats jumped on the board early, scoring on their first possession with a 9-play 60 yard drive which was capped off by a Caleb Dean touchdown run. On the ensuing drive, West Ottawa snapped the first play over the quarterback's head and Jenison tackled him in the end zone for a safety. The Wildcats led 8-0 with 8:35 left in the first quarter. Jenison received the ball back after the safety and scored just five plays later on a Carter VanManen keeper to put Jenison up 15-0 halfway through the first frame.
West Ottawa would answer early in the second quarter on a 12-play 76 yard drive to cut their deficit to 15-7, however the Wildcats answered right back. Dean found a hole and scored on a 24-yard scamper with 8:12 remaining in the first half to give Jenison a two score lead. The Panthers were set to punt with just under 12 seconds remaining in the half when Leo Vandentoorn blocked the kick and Cam Duval scoop the ball and ran it in for a touchdown. Jenison led 29-7 at the break.
Owen Snyder would add a pair of field goals in the second half as the Wildcats cruised in the second half to their second win of the season.
Dean finished the night with 15 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Jenison offense, while Vandentoorn, Landon Mueller, and Colin Diekman each had five total tackles for the defense.
Jenison will travel to Caledonia (6-0, playing Rockford tonight) next week.
