The Jenison football team fell to Hudsonville, 23-22, on Friday night at David McKenzie Stadium in OK Red action. The Wildcats fall to 1-3 (0-2) on the season, while the Eagles improve to 2-2 (2-0).
The two teams were tied at 15-15 with 8:50 left in the 4th quarter before Jenison completed an 8-play drive, capped by a Caleb Dean 29-yard touchdown run, to take a 22-15 lead at the 4:59 mark. Hudsonville would answer just three plays later on a 78-yard touchdown pass and converted the two point conversion to take their first lead of the game at 23-22 with 4:06 left. Jenison drove down to the Hudsonville five-yard line with 15 seconds remaining, but after QB Carter VanManen slipped on the wet turf, the field goal unit was rushed onto the field and the attempt was no good.
After a scoreless first quarter, the defensive battle would continue much of the second quarter. Jenison would finally break into the scoring column, completing a 13-play drive that featured Caleb Dean getting his punt blocked, then recovering it and running 40 yards for a first down. VanManen would score from one yard out and Jenison converted a fake XP attempt to take an 8-0 lead that would hold up into the halftime break.
Hudsonville scored their first points of the game with 2:25 left in the third quarter on a 33-yard touchdown pass and converted the two point conversion to tie the game at 8-8. Jenison would strike back on a Dean nine-yard touchdown run just three minutes later early in the fourth quarter to give Jenison a 15-8 lead. The Eagles, facing a third and eight at the Jenison 29, threw a lob in the back of the end zone for a touchdown at the 8:50 mark of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 15-15.
Caleb Dean rushed for 175 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns, while also catching four passes for 50 yards. Cam Duval led the defense with six tackles.
Jenison will look to bounce back at Grandville (1-3, 0-2) next Friday.
