The Jenison football team fell, 52-17, vs. Rockford in front of a huge crowd at David McKenzie Stadium on Friday night. The Wildcats fall to 1-5 on the season, while the No. 1 ranked Rams improve to 6-0.
Rockford scored on their first possession of the game before Jenison answered back with a field goal. The Rams led 7-3 after the first quarter of play.
The Jenison defense got big stops on multiple goal to go situations early in the second quarter and held the Rams to a field goal, keeping it a one possession game at 10-3 with 11:19 left in the second quarter. Jenison responded with a six play, 73 yard drive, that was capped off by an incredible touchdown catch by RJ Rathsack as he tipped the ball up and caught it while falling in the end zone. Rockford would score just minutes later and retook the lead, 17-10, at the 8:04 mark of the second quarter. The Wildcats would not go away. Jenison embarked on a 15-play drive that took up six minutes of game clock and scored on a 13-yard keeper by QB Carter VanManen with 1:50 left in the half.
The Rams would answer the long Jenison touchdown drive with a score right before the half and led 24-17 at the break.
Rockford scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Jenison will host West Ottawa next Friday night (Oct. 8) in annual Homecoming Game.
