May 19-20 Athletics Recap

TRACK AND FIELD


The Jenison track and field teams competed in regional play on Friday at Grand Haven. The boys finished in sixth place, while the girls finished seventh overall.


Joey Bonacci broke the school record en route to a regional championship in pole vault with a height of 15'1. Maya Guikema also earned a regional title in the 1600 meters.


Seth Conner earned a bid to the State Meet with a second place finish in the 1600 meters.


Madelyn VandeBunte, Maggie Otto, Macy Guikema, and Maya Guikema clinched a state berth in the 4x800 relay.


SOFTBALL


The No. 5 ranked softball team finished 2-1 at the Blue Chip Tournament on Saturday. The Wildcats improve their record to 23-6 on the season.


W, 7-1 vs. Clinton


Brynn Timmer threw a complete-game, allowing just one unearned run and stuck out five.


Terin Maynard recorded a team-high three hits, while Kenadee Schnick, Mia VanderHeide, and Liv Bisonet each tallied multi-hit games.


L, 3-2 vs. Edwardsburg


Alli Wright allowed just three hits and three unearned runs in six innings on the mound while striking out eight.


Claire Merritt led the offense with two hits.


W, 11-1 vs. Mona Shores


Korrie Schurrman and Addi Herbig combined to allow just one run and one hit in the five-inning victory.


Terin Maynard and Ellen Smit each had three hits, while Alli Wright, Emily DeWeerd, and Mia VanderHeide had two hits a piece.


BASEBALL


The No. 12 ranked Jenison baseball team finished 2-2 on Friday and Saturday in a pair of doubleheaders. The Wildcats beat Forest Hills Central by scores of 9-7 and 10-3, before falling to No. 4 ranked (D2) Stevensville Lakeshore, 2-1 and 8-4, on Saturday.

Landon Mueller earned the win, throwing four innings in relief and allowing just two runs.


Jenison trailed 7-4 in the final inning before a bases-loaded single by Mueller got by the right fielder and scored three runs to tie the game. Hayden Winger tripled the next at-bat to give the Wildcats the lead.


Corbin Bennetts and Mueller each had two hits to pace the offense.


In game two, Case Hennip earned the victory, throwing six innings and striking out nine batters.


Bennetts tallied four hits, while Jack Wiercinski and Bear Casarez each had a pair of hits.


vs. Stevensville Lakeshore


Ben Slagter allowed just two runs in six innings of work on the mound, but was tagged with the loss in game one.


In game two, Lakeshore broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning, plating four runs to take a commanding lead.


Mueller had a team-high two hits in game two.


GIRLS WATER POLO


The Jenison girls water polo team fell, 7-5, vs. East Kentwood in the opening round of regionals to end the season.


Hailey Sherman scored three goals to lead the offensive attack.
